If you have a UPVC, composite or aluminium front door anywhere across Medway, Rochester, Chatham, Gillingham, Strood or Rainham, there is a good chance the lock cylinder in your door is vulnerable to one of the most common forms of break-in in the UK. It is called a snap attack, and it is the reason so many otherwise modern, well-built homes still get broken into.

Here is what it is, why it works, and what you can do about it.

What is a snap attack?

A snap attack is exactly what it sounds like. A burglar grips the front of the euro cylinder (the brass-coloured lock barrel that sits in the centre of your door handle), applies pressure with a basic tool, and snaps it in half. Once the cylinder is broken, they can manipulate the internal mechanism and unlock the door from the outside, with no key.

It takes less than 30 seconds in the hands of someone who has done it before. It makes very little noise. It does not require specialist tools. And it works on the standard euro cylinder fitted to the vast majority of UK doors made in the last 25 years.

Why does it work?

Standard euro cylinders have a structural weak point in the middle, where the centre cam is housed. Older designs were not engineered to resist this kind of attack because, frankly, no one was doing it. When the technique spread among burglars in the mid-2010s, it spread fast, and the entire industry had to catch up.

The fix has existed for years. The problem is that most homes still have the old, unprotected cylinders fitted as standard from the original installer, and most homeowners have no reason to know.

How to tell if your cylinder is vulnerable

Look at the front of your door handle. The cylinder is the metal cylinder shape with the keyhole in it, projecting slightly from the handle. If it looks completely smooth and standard, it is likely the original basic euro cylinder.

You are looking for a small marking on the face of the cylinder, near the keyhole. Modern anti-snap cylinders carry one of two main markings:

TS 007 with a star rating. Three-star is the highest level of certification. One-star and two-star cylinders only meet the standard when combined with a TS 007 two-star door handle.

Sold Secure Diamond. An independent certification that confirms the cylinder has resisted real-world attack testing.

If you cannot see either of these markings on your cylinder, it is almost certainly the original basic type.

How to stop a snap attack

The fix is simple. Replace your euro cylinder with a properly certified anti-snap cylinder. A good anti-snap design includes a deliberate sacrificial section at the front that snaps off harmlessly, leaving the internal mechanism intact and the door still locked.

The whole job typically takes 15 to 20 minutes. You do not need to replace the door, the handle or anything else. Just the cylinder.

We supply and fit certified anti-snap cylinders across Medway every day. Brands like Apecs, ABS, Ultion and Brisant Securities all produce excellent options at sensible prices. Most jobs are completed on the spot from the van, with no second visit required.

Is it worth doing?

Almost certainly, yes. Here is why:

Insurance. A growing number of UK home insurers now expect anti-snap protection as a baseline. If your policy specifies BS3621 or “anti-snap” requirements and you do not have it, a claim after a snap attack break-in could be reduced or refused.

Cost. A quality anti-snap cylinder, supplied and fitted, typically costs less than £150. The average cost of a UK domestic break-in (replacement of stolen items, door repair, emotional impact aside) is several thousand pounds.

Effort. Twenty minutes of inconvenience now, in exchange for closing off the most common UK break-in method for the next decade. The trade-off is not a difficult one.
